A dark-fantasy game of English sound

Phonemeforge

The forge is cold.
It answers only to sound spoken true.

Learn English pronunciation the way a smith learns metal — by ear, by hand, and by ruining a great many attempts. Every sound you master is forged into a rune and kept in your codex.

The cold forge

Every sound in English was struck here once, at the first forge, and set into a rune. When the last smith fell silent the fires went out, and the runes scattered into the mouths of mortals — misheard, mispronounced, and worn smooth.

You are the new apprentice. The forge does not care what grammar you know or how many words you have collected. It listens, and it judges only sound.

Your work

  • Train the ear

Before you can strike a sound you must hear it. Ship or sheep, bat or bad, thin or fin — spoken by dozens of different voices, because a sound you only know from one mouth is a sound you do not know.

  • Forge the runes

Spell words in the runic script — ʃɪp, ˈfəʊtəɡrɑːf — by setting tiles into the anvil and placing the stress. Master a sound and its rune is yours, permanently, in your codex.

  • Walk the Isogloss Isles

Every isle speaks differently. Learn to tell Received Pronunciation from Scouse, Geordie, Glaswegian and General American by ear alone — and hear what each one does to the runes you thought you knew.

The runes

The International Phonetic Alphabet is this world's runic script. Strike one to read its lore.

as in about

The tired rune. It says nothing clearly and appears more often than any other — every unstressed syllable is its hiding place.

The Gauntlet

Every Monday the forge seals one challenge and sets it before every apprentice alive — the same trials, the same order, one attempt each. Survive it faster and cleaner than the rest and your name stands at the top of the ladder until the next week burns it away.

Take the apprentice's oath

Phonemeforge is being built in the open, one region at a time. Leave an address and you will be told when the first fire is lit.

One message when it opens. No list, no resale, no newsletter.

Free and open source under the AGPL-3.0. Built alongside OpenSchwa, its sibling project, which will one day judge your pronunciation under a single rule: no feedback beats wrong feedback.
